The key to making the planes work is to make players proactive in their first forays into them, I think, and showing off the idea of "alien beauty". Have people riding magic carpets, travelling in flying ships, or in "air whales", as I love to call them (basically, a minor form of dragons, without fire breath). The elemental plane of air is not too bad, as long as players have a means to fly, and can be used in all sorts of airship type adventures. Oftentimes this takes the form of some research into what is going on. There are however ways to avoid kicking the bucket if you come prepared. The elemental plane of Fire, earth, and to a minor degree, water, are fairly dangerous. The point of the Elemental planes is that "you don't go there unless prepared".
